What Does Hochschild Mining Do?
Hochschild Mining is a British precious metals mining company with its headquarters in London. The company has mines in Argentina, Peru and Chile and produces silver and gold. It is listed on the London Stock Exchange and is a constituent of the FTSE 250 Index.
The Company was founded in 1911 by Ernest Hochschild. He was born in Hamburg, Germany, into a family of Jewish diamond merchants. In 1902, at the age of 21, he went to work for his uncle’s diamond business in South Africa.
Six years later he moved to London to set up his own diamond trading business.
In 1911 Hochschild diversified into gold mining, purchasing the San José mine in Argentina. The mine had been closed since 1904 due to labour unrest but Hochschild reopened it within two years and it soon became profitable.
By 1914 output from the mine was around 3,000 ounces per month; by 1919 it had reached 12,000 ounces per month making it one of the largest gold producers in South America. Further mines were acquired including those at Pocitos (1914), Sierra Grande (1917) and Pachón (1920). All these properties were sold during World War I as part of the war effort but re-purchased afterwards.
During World War II production from all the Argentine mines ceased as most of the employees were conscripted into military service or left to work on farms producing food for the country which was cut off from imports by enemy action on shipping lanes.
